Complaints to TCJS about Inmate Medical Care are Common-Pt9
An Inmate Dies After Being Denied Dialysis Treatments
Another example of the horrors of denial of medical care in jails is a story outside Texas involving a 23-year-old man who had late-stage kidney disease. When he was booked into a county jail, he let the jail staff and fellow inmates know about his health condition and medical needs. The man had been on dialysis. A jail administrator said that medical staff at the jail evaluated the inmate about a dozen times, and they never sought emergency care. He further said that actions were in the works to get the inmate’s medical needs taken care of.
Ultimately, it was too late. After just six days in jail and of being denied medical care, the man died.
An Inmate with a History of Seizures Dies after Denial of Medical Care
For the offense of driving on a suspended license, a young woman was placed in a County Jail outside of Texas and died four days later. Family members say that she had a history of seizures resulting from a drug dependency, which was reported to the jail. Yet, there is no evidence that the woman received the treatment she needed. According to her family and fellow inmates, the woman suffered terribly, experiencing pain, and she died unnecessarily.
