Forty-five-year-old Crystal Hale was booked into the Ector County Jail on May 19, 2025. Tragically, Ms. Hale died four days later. The Ector County Sheriff’s Office filed a custodial death report (CDR) about Ms. Hale on June 30, 2025.

Ms. Hale’s cause of death will be determined by the results of an autopsy. However, Ms. Hale was transported to a local hospital after having a seizure at around 7:16 a.m. on May 22. Hospital personnel discovered that Ms. Hale’s medical cause of death was likely a brain bleed. Crystal Hale was pronounced deceased at Medical Center Hospital at 9:35 a.m. on May 23, 2025.

The CDR indicates that Ms. Hale received medical treatment for the condition that caused her death after her admission into the jail’s jurisdiction. She had been housed in a multiple-occupancy cell.

The address of Ector County Jail aka Ector County Detention Center is 2500 US-385, Odessa, TX 79766. The jail’s housing capacity is 667 detainees.

Do Two Suicides in Ector County Jail Suggest a Concerning Pattern?

Jails should be held accountable for preventable deaths so that deadly patterns do not continue. The environment of jails alone apparently creates a pattern of suicide. For many years, suicide has been the leading cause of death in county and municipal jails. So, for individuals to survive the experience of incarceration, there needs to be a certain level of awareness about inmate behavior. There is no place for indifference among jail staff because they are the ones who are most likely to save lives when inmates are attempting suicide.

In late 2022 and early 2023, details of two suicides at Ector County Jail in Odessa are revealed in the custodial death reports of the deceased inmates because their acts of suicide were captured on video. Details about the first of the two are below, including the findings of a follow-up jail inspection, as follows:

  • A video camera captured the suicidal actions of 55-year-old Douglas Walter Hassell. Mr. Hassell was incarcerated in Ector County Jail from October 2, 2022, until his death by suicide on October 21, 2022. Every action was captured, from his using a sheet to block other inmates from seeing him in his single-occupancy cell to his going unconscious with a sheet around his neck. Mr. Hassel was not found until a few hours later, when he was pronounced deceased in his cell.
  • Months later, in May 2023, video and documentation at the time of Mr. Hassel’s death were reviewed in a jail inspection. The following are notes from the inspectors with the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS):
    • It was determined that nine face-to-face observations did not occur due to the view into the cell being obstructed by a sheet that the inmate had placed over the cell door.
