David Decoteau Dies in an Augusta, Georgia, Detention Center
In September 17, 2025, Georgia news, the Richmond County Coroner’s Office revealed the name of an inmate who died in his cell at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center earlier that day.
Inmate David Mark Decoteau, 27, was booked into the Charles B. Webster jail on August 21, 2025. He had been housed in a single-occupancy cell and, for preventative reasons, was under video surveillance and face-to-face observation checks by jail staff.
At 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, he was last seen alive and sitting up in his bunk. Detention personnel discovered him unresponsive later on, but it was still in the early hours of that day. They immediately began lifesaving measures and contacted Central Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Paramedics transported Mr. Decoteau to WellStar MCG Health, where, at about 6 a.m. on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, he was pronounced deceased.
After the death of Mr. Decoteau, a review of written logs and surveillance footage confirmed that he was routinely monitored.
Officials addressed some false social media claims about a custodial death that were fully debunked during the week by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
An autopsy has been scheduled, and the ongoing investigation into Mr. Decoteau’s cause of death will be led by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

Stacey Nicole Lopez Dies in the Custody of the Charles B. Webster Detention Center
Stacey Nicole Lopez was only 18 years old when jail staff with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office found her unresponsive in an isolation cell at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center on September 5, 2023. She was transported to Augusta University Medical Center, where she received treatment. Tragically, Ms. Lopez was pronounced deceased on September 6, 2023.
The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Decatur conducted an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The GBI Regional Investigative Office in Thomson, Georgia, took the lead in the investigation.
Patrick Logan Dies in the Custody of the Weber Jail in Augusta, Georgia
Patrick Logan was arrested on January 6, 2023, and booked into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center. Authorities say that Mr. Logan was taken to a hospital repeatedly during his incarceration. He collapsed in a booking area cell on March 3, 2023, shortly after returning from another trip to the hospital. Fifty-one-year-old Patrick Logan was pronounced deceased at 8:40 p.m. that day, according to a press release from the coroner’s office.
The coroner initially said that Mr. Logan’s death appeared to be from natural causes, but an autopsy was scheduled. The Richmond County Coroner’s Office investigated the death of Mr. Logan in conjunction with the GBI.
In June 2025, the Augusta Jail was Accused of Neglect
The public has accused the Charles B. Webster Detention Center of maintaining a pattern of jail neglect, including serving inmates spoiled food and inadequate portions. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was asked to investigate the matter. The mother of an inmate who died in the Webster jail alleges that her son had not been fed before his death.
