DeAngelo Dewayne Brown is Found Dead in Alabama’s Birmingham City Jail

Forty-year-old DeAngelo Dewayne Brown was booked into Alabama’s Birmingham City Jail on Sunday, June 29, 2025. He was discovered unresponsive in his single-occupancy cell at 11:14 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2025. Sadly, DeAngelo Dewayne Brown was pronounced deceased a few minutes later, at 11:58 p.m. An autopsy was scheduled for July 3. Results of the autopsy will determine Mr. Brown’s cause of death.

Inmates Die in Birmingham City Jail in Similar Circumstances
Investigations into the deaths of jail inmates are standard procedures. There may be more to the stories that follow, but initially, the facts stamped out are essentially the same and leave nothing but questions. The following are stories of several deaths that have occurred in Birmingham City Jail in Alabama:
- The death of DeAngelo Brown in Birmingham City Jail is similar to the death of Sonny Charles Leppala, 55. Lifesaving measures were applied after he was discovered unresponsive during a 1:29 a.m. wellness check. An hour later, Mr. Leppala was pronounced deceased in his cell at Birmingham City Jail on January 20, 2025. An autopsy found no evidence of foul play or trauma in Mr. Leppala’s death. An investigation into the death was being handled by the Birmingham Police Department.
- Omar La Keith Johnson, 48, was booked into Birmingham City Jail on October 3, 2022. Brief news of his March 2, 2023, death discloses that he was discovered unresponsive by another inmate at 8:30 a.m. that morning. Mr. Johnson was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 3:31 p.m. that day.
- On a charge of public intoxication, 53-year-old Tambrala Smith was booked into Birmingham City Jail on August 7, 2023. The next day at 10 p.m., Ms. Smith was discovered unresponsive in her cell. Lifesaving measures were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced deceased inside the jail.
Angela Karen Langely Kimberly Dies After Incarceration in Birmingham City Jail
After she got into a driving under the influence (DUI) crash on December 12, 2022, Angela Karen Langely Kimberly was arrested and booked into Birmingham City Jail. First, however, police officers took Ms. Kimberly to an emergency room (ER) to be evaluated. When she was discharged, strict instructions were given that she should return to the ER if symptoms developed.
When she was going through intake at the jail, Ms. Kimberly had a cough, shortness of breath, and a sore throat. Jail records showed that she tested positive for COVID-19. Immediately, she was placed in isolation for seven days. However, allegedly, no medications were prescribed to treat the COVID-19 infection or the symptoms.
Ms. Kimberly tested negative for COVID-19 on December 20, and she was released from solitary confinement. Sadly, her condition worsened the next day. On December 22, 2022, Ms. Kimberly was so ill, she was unable to walk without assistance. Later that morning, she was discovered unresponsive. Allegedly, emergency medical assistance was not called until she had been deceased for several hours, and rigor mortis had set in her face and extremities. Ms. Kimberly’s family asserted that she had been denied crucial medical attention.
