A Detainee in Liberty County Dies After a Suicide Attempt

A 27-year-old man who was booked into Liberty County Jail on April 25, 2023, was still in the jail’s custody when he was pronounced deceased on June 3, 2023. He died as a result of a suicide attempt. The family is mentioned in the custodial death report (CDR) throughout the summary of how his death occurred. The address of the jail where the detainee was housed in a multiple occupancy cell was 2400 Beaumont Ave., Liberty, TX 77575.

The 27-year-old was discovered hanging in the bathroom area of a cell occupied by 20-plus men, and it appears that happened on the day he died. Just prior to the suicide, the man’s family called the jail and asked for frequent checks on him because, they said, he was making threats to self-harm.

The warden of the jail said that a correctional officer checked on the man and then checked on him 15 minutes later, and that’s when he was found hanging. He was allowed to have a uniform and linens, like all inmates.

Note that on some jail protocols, detainees on suicide watch are given items that cannot be used to form a ligature. A suicide prevention strategy to prevent at-risk detainees from hanging themselves can be very effective since hanging is the method used for more than 92% of local jail suicides.
