Restraint Chair Statistics & Incidents in the News
- A Tennessee inmate was strapped into a restraint chair, and county jail officers repeatedly tased him. The entire incident was captured on video, including the words of one of the officers saying he would keep on tasing the inmate until he ran out of batteries.
- In a Florida county jail, a man was placed in a restraint chair with a spit hood over his head. At the time that he was immobilized in the chair, jailers sprayed him with pepper spray multiple times. He was later doused with pepper spray twice more and left in the chair for an additional 6 hours. Tragically, upon release from the chair, the inmate was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died.
- In Georgia, a 22-year-old mentally ill inmate was restrained in a chair and was tased by police. He later died while still in police custody.
- In one Florida county jail, the Sheriff’s Office had record of using the restraint chair 137 times in 2014 and 130 times the following year.
- A Georgia county sheriff’s records revealed that in just the first six months of 2013, a restraint chair was used to restrain 129 inmates.
