Do Texas Inmates Often Suffer Due to Medical Neglect?-Pt.6
Larry David Hurt is Placed in a Restraint Chair
Police in Marshall, Texas, made contact with Larry David Hurt after family members reported that he was under the influence of methamphetamine. Mr. Hurt’s mother requested that he leave her home. Deputies were transporting Mr. Hurt to a nearby motel when he began using his legs to force one of the deputies into the steering wheel. He reportedly then tried breaking the patrol car’s rear window.
Deputies then advised Mr. Hurt that he was under arrest, and he was placed in handcuffs. Mr. Hurt reportedly continued screaming and pushing on the patrol car cage. After they arrived at the Harrison County Jail, Mr. Hurt refused to get out of the patrol car. Deputies were forced to physically remove him and effectively carry him into the jail.
Mr. Hurt reportedly continued to be disruptive. After he locked his feet around and underneath a cabinet, a taser was used to apply a technique known as drive stunning to gain compliance from him.
Jailers and deputies together finally secured Mr. Hurt in a restraint chair at 1:48 PM on March 1, 2021, the day of his death. In the chair, the decedent was housed in a detox cell near the booking center at the jail.
