Gregg County Jail Detainee John Anderson Dies

The Gregg County Sheriff’s Department, in Longview, Texas, filed a report regarding the custodial death of John Anderson. Mr. Anderson was 64 years old at the time of his death. We provide in this post information we obtained from that report, and we make no allegation of any wrongdoing against anyone.

The summary portion of the report reads in its entirety:

“On December 12, 2023, at or about 1320 hours, Jailer Cameron Postins and Robbin Bullard were performing a scheduled floor walk at the North Facility of the Gregg County Jail when they found an inmate in a separation cell that would not respond when summoned. Consequently, Postins and Bullard, entered the cell and found inmate John Edward Anderson, B/M XX/XX/1959 unresponsive.

Postins, Bullard, and other staff then began to provide medical aid to Anderson, which included CPR and the use of an AED. At about 1329 hours, Longview Fire/EMS arrived at the cell and took over lifesaving efforts, and eventually transported him to Christus Good Shepard Medical Center for further medical intervention.

At the hospital, Emergency Department staff continued to try and save Anderson for several minutes, and at approximately 1402 hours, Doctors pronounced Anderson dead. Anderson was a homeless individual, in jail for criminal trespass, and he had been incarcerated at the time of his death for 10 days.

Upon booking, Anderson refused to complete the jail’s medical and psychological screenings, and in addition, Anderson was an exact CCQ match. Per protocol, he was consequently placed on a 30-minute suicide watch. At the time of his death, Anderson remained on suicide watch in Separation cell 9 at the North Facility. There were no signs of foul play or signs that would indicate a suicide attempt had been made by Anderson. The cell was secured after Anderson was moved by EMS, and the Texas Rangers, assisted by Gregg County SO Investigators began an investigation into the death.”
