Hidalgo County Jail in Texas Found Non-Compliant with State Standards

The Hidalgo County Jail (also known as the Hidalgo County Detention Center) in Edinburg, Texas was officially found non-compliant with Texas jail standards after a special inspection by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS) in January 2026. This notice of non-compliance highlights serious failures in how the jail handled medical and health-related requests from inmates — issues that can put detainees at risk.  According to the TCJS notice of non-compliance:

  • Hidalgo County Jail failed to view and respond to inmate sick-call request tickets in a timely manner10 out of 15 sick-call tickets submitted between July 14, 2025 and December 8, 2025 were not viewed by staff as required under Texas Minimum Jail Standards.

  • The time between when inmates submitted the sick-call and when staff actually viewed the requests ranged from 15 to 45 days, far beyond acceptable standards.

This failure violates Rule §273.2(3) of the Texas Minimum Jail Standards, which requires procedures to ensure efficient and prompt care for acute and emergency medical situations in jail.

When sick-call requests aren’t handled promptly, inmates with serious medical needs — including untreated chronic conditions and injuries — can suffer preventable harm. Delays in reviewing medical requests can also contribute to avoidable deaths and constitutional violations related to inadequate medical care in custody.
