Jack “Jay” Farmer Jr. Dies by Suicide in Greene County Jail
On July 7, 2023, Jack “Jay” Farmer Jr. was arrested and booked into Greene County Jail. In the “l” pod of the jail, Mr. Farmer used a telephone cord to hang himself on July 23, 2023.
Some of the things that allegedly happened in the 16 days that Mr. Farmer was incarcerated only highlighted the need to keep him on the strictest suicide watch, which is continuous supervision. The suicide watch the jail placed him on included an hour of recreational time. It was during the recreational time that he took his own life.
Some of the precautions for a person with a high level of suicide risk include:
- Placing the person in a “safe room” or in the jail’s medical sickbay.
- If the person exhibits or talks about suicidal intentions, bedding and other items that could be used to form a ligature should be removed.
- Face-to-face inmate checks should occur no later than every five minutes during the day and every ten minutes at night, although sometimes continuous monitoring is necessary.
In this case, after Mr. Farmer hanged himself, footage shows that it took a jail officer 20 minutes to respond.
