Inmate Bryce Hilzer Dies in Washington’s Benton County Jail

In Washington state news dated December 17, 2025, authorities are investigating the death of a 33-year-old West Richland man who died while in custody at the Benton County Jail following an early-morning arrest.
The inmate, identified as Bryce Hilzer, had a reported history of diabetes and substance use and was being monitored in the jail’s booking area at the time of his death.
According to information released by investigators, law enforcement was contacted by family members at approximately 2:30 a.m. after Mr. Hilzer was reportedly “acting strangely” at a residence in West Richland. Police officers and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene. During the encounter, officials reported that Mr. Hilzer became combative and attempted to strike an officer. He was subsequently shocked with a Taser and arrested.
Following the arrest, Mr. Hilzer was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. After being medically cleared, he was transferred to the Benton County Jail in Kennewick, where he arrived at approximately 4:15 a.m. Jail officials stated that he was placed in the booking area, a location intended to allow correctional officers and medical staff to observe detainees who may require additional monitoring.
At around 11:00 a.m., correctional staff discovered Mr. Hilzer unresponsive. Jail personnel, medical staff, and fire department medics immediately initiated life-saving measures. Despite those efforts, Mr. Hilzer was pronounced deceased at the jail.
The Benton County Sheriff’s Office requested that the Regional Special Investigations Unit (SIU) handle the death investigation. The SIU is a multi-agency task force made up of detectives from Benton, Franklin, and Walla Walla counties and is commonly assigned to investigate deaths involving individuals in police or jail custody.
An autopsy was scheduled to determine the official cause and manner of death. No conclusions have yet been released.
Deaths occurring in the booking and detox unit often raise serious legal questions about medical screening, supervision, and response protocols. When individuals with known medical conditions or signs of distress are taken into custody, correctional facilities have a legal obligation to provide appropriate care and monitoring to protect their health and safety.
The address of the Benton County Jail is 7122 W Okanogan Pl, Suite B110, Kennewick, Washington 99336. The jail has a 720-bed capacity.
Inmate Deaths in U.S. Jails Have Become Highly Controversial
Inmate deaths that occur within hours of a detainee going through the booking process are so common that the occurrence could arguably become normalized. On the same day that the above report about a custodial death in Benton County Jail was released, a sheriff’s office in Texas filed a custodial death report about a woman who died in Archer County Jail in November 2025 within 18 hours after her arrival. And in the Benton County Jail in July 2023, a 74-year-old woman died hours after she went through intake.
A watchdog group wrote an exposé in April 2024 about concealed custodial deaths in U.S. jails. Many concerns should alert communities to the risk of arrest because being placed in a local jail should never be a death sentence.
The address of the Archer County Jail and Sheriff’s Office is 100 Law Enforcement Way, Archer City, Texas 76351.
