In news dated October 22, 2025, out of Bibb County, Georgia, an inmate who was arrested in a hospital died the next day by suicide.

On October 21, 2025, Christopher Henderson, 50, was tased by law enforcement officers during his arrest at Piedmont Hospital in Macon, Georgia, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office. He was then booked into the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center.

In the early morning the next day, Mr. Henderson was discovered deceased in his cell. Lifesaving measures were provided to Mr. Henderson. EMS was contacted. When they arrived, medics made further efforts to revive Mr. Henderson. He was transported by ambulance to Piedmont Hospital, where Christopher Henderson was pronounced deceased on October 22.

The sheriff’s office said that based on evidence in his cell, he died by suicide. The Bibb County Coroner’s Office has since confirmed that Mr. Henderson died of suicide.

There is an ongoing investigation into Mr. Henderson’s death, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) will assist.

This was the fifth death that has been reported at the Bibb County jail in 2025 so far. At least one other suicide has occurred this year. Tragically, Wesley Kyle Gautney, 41, hung himself in the Macon, Georgia, jail and died at a hospital on June 23, 2025.

The address of Bibb County Law Enforcement Center is 668 Oglethorpe St, Macon, Georgia 31201. The jail has a 966-bed capacity. This encompasses the Hazel Street facility and the detention center on Oglethorpe Street.

A Georgia Watchdog Group Insists the Bibb County Jail Make Immediate Reforms

There has been recent controversy over jail conditions and inmate deaths in Bibb County Jail. Not only is the Georgia NAACP demanding reforms, but the suicide death of Christopher Henderson led state Senators to request that the U.S. Department of Justice investigate conditions in the jail.

As recently as October 13, 2025, the May 2024 death of 41-year-old Bibb County inmate Stephen Fossett has been in the news. Mr. Fossett had a history of schizophrenia. He died after a struggle with officers in the jail, and it has been determined that a taser killed him.

George Crafter was Pronounced Deceased by Medics in Bibb County Jail

When George Oliver Crafter, 62, was booked into Bibb County Jail he had an extensive medical history. He was discovered unresponsive by corrections deputies at approximately 6 a.m. on April 30, 2025. Medics pronounced George Crafter deceased at the scene. Very little is said about this tragic death, other than that it is under ongoing investigation.

Many alleged claims of unacceptable, violent conditions at the jail have brought it under scrutiny. New protocols have purportedly been implemented in the jail in recent months. Understaffing is allegedly a problem.

Recent research showed that in U.S. jails, almost 70% of the detainees with chronic medical conditions never receive medical treatment. When someone like George Oliver Crafter dies, it is not unreasonable to wonder whether he received necessary medical care in the jail. Whenever inmates die due to medical neglect, abuse, or denial of medical care due to deliberate indifference, those responsible must be held accountable.
