Dedrick Djuan Polk, 53, went through intake at Grayson County Jail on July 16, 2026. Tragically, less than one month later, he was declared deceased while still in the jail’s custody. The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office filed a custodial death report (CDR) about Mr. Polk on August 25, 2026. The report shows that Mr. Polk exhibited medical problems during the booking process. His cause of death is pending autopsy results.

The CDR briefly summarizes how Mr. Polk’s death occurred as follows:

At about 6:20 p.m. on August 13, 2026, Dedrick Polk was observed in the day room near a table. An inmate nearby appeared to assist in supporting him. Mr. Polk was reportedly shaking and foaming at the mouth, signs that suggested possible seizure activity.

Medical staff arrived around 6:22 p.m. They did not detect a pulse and began CPR, then applied an automated external defibrillator (AED). Sherman EMS reached the jail at approximately 6:32 p.m. and took over emergency lifesaving efforts. The EMS team transported Mr. Polk to Sherman Medical Center, arriving there at about 6:48 p.m. Despite these efforts, Dedrick Polk was pronounced deceased at 7:06 p.m. on August 13.

Questions to Consider After a Sudden Medical Death in Jail

Shaking and foaming at the mouth prior to death indicate several possible serious medical emergencies, such as seizures and electrolyte disturbances. Medications, changes to them, and withdrawal from substances can trigger seizures. However, an episode about a month after incarceration should not be attributed to the original drug-related arrest.  Determining the cause requires medical evidence, including the autopsy, toxicology findings, laboratory results, and the inmate’s medical history.

Legally, the key question is not only what caused the death. It is also whether warning signs appeared beforehand and were addressed appropriately. An investigation should examine the intake medical screening and documented health problems. It should also review medications, treatment requests, sick-call records, and vital signs. Laboratory testing, prior seizure activity, and changes in behavior or physical condition during the month of incarceration should be considered.

The timeline immediately before the emergency also matters. Medical and jail records, surveillance video, observation logs, witness accounts, and emergency-response documentation can help establish when symptoms first appeared and how quickly staff responded. Expert review could determine that additional monitoring, diagnostic testing, medications, a physician or hospital referral, or earlier treatment were indicated.

Grayson County Jail currently has a capacity of 391 inmates. The jail’s address is 200 S. Crockett St., Sherman, Texas 75090.
