A Death in New York’s Erie County Holding Center Was Allegedly Preventable
As is the case in many other U.S. jails at various times, the Erie County Holding Center in New York has been the focus of scrutiny for allegedly preventable inmate deaths, many of which were caused by medical neglect. One of those inmates was Sean Riordan, who died in the jail in 2022. Some details surrounding his death are below.
Sean Riordan was brought to the Erie County Holding Center on June 2, 2022. Upon entry, he complained of being nauseous and vomiting. Rather than transferring him to the Erie County Medical Center for an assessment regarding alcohol withdrawal and treatment, the jail staff underscored his detox screen. He was placed in a holding center housing unit.
The following morning, Mr. Riordan was moved to the detox unit. He was heard throwing up, and in the evening, he reported that he was throwing up blood. At that time, he was moved to the jail medical unit. Mr. Riordan had a sleepless night, and he was transferred out of the detox unit for disrupting other inmates.
On June 4th, 2022, Mr. Riordan fell after saying that he was dizzy, nauseous, and felt dehydrated. No action was taken at that time. Allegedly, he should have seen a physician or been sent to the hospital.
On June 5, Mr. Riordan refused breakfast and collapsed. A deputy called for a medical emergency. After falling a second time, he was taken by wheelchair to the medical unit. He fell again.
Mr. Riordan was placed on a mattress, and he was given an oxygen mask, but was not responsive at that time. Allegedly, at this juncture, Mr. Riordan should have been provided with assistance in his respirations. In addition, a defibrillator should have been used.
Ultimately, EMS was called, and he was taken in an ambulance to a hospital. Tragically, on his 30th birthday, June 14, 2022, Sean Riordan died at the hospital from complications of alcohol withdrawal or “chronic ethanolism.” A medical review board said that his death may have been prevented if he had been promptly taken to the hospital for treatment.
Erie County Holding Center is at 40 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, New York 14202. The facility has a 638-inmate capacity.
