Is Death by Hypothermia the Latest Restraint Chair Atrocity in a US Jail?
A physician has allegedly determined that hypothermia was the cause of death of a 33-year-old inmate who was incarcerated in a county jail outside Texas in January 2023. Among other charges, the mentally handicapped man was accused of allegedly firing a shot at deputies when he was attempting to evade arrest.
Among the speculations that have made the news regarding this story that was published last week is one that highlights disturbing activities related to restraint chairs. An interested party suggested that the man froze to death after being strapped into a restraint chair, placed in a freezer or some other frigid environment, and left there for hours.
This sensational case is under investigation. Already, however, the details of the death as told by the sheriff’s department providing oversight to the jail have allegedly been proven false. At this point one can only speculate as to whether this was another case of the worst of humanity on display in connection with the use of a restraint chair.
A video clip has emerged allegedly showing that on the day of his death, the inmate had been left to languish naked on a bare cement floor for at least five hours. The cell lacked a bed or other furnishings and only had a drain that could be used as a toilet. When the dying man was transported to a hospital later that day, it was in the back of a sheriff’s vehicle, not in an ambulance.
