Is Jail Neglect a Widespread Problem in Texas?-Pt.18
A Detainee in a Texas County Jail Dies After Ingesting Fentanyl
The family members of a Texas jail detainee who died of fentanyl and a mixture of other drugs are asking how the drugs got into the facility.
The detainee was seen vomiting into a toilet at about 4 a.m. the day he died. A correctional officer discovered the family’s loved one unresponsive hours later. He was transported to a local hospital before being pronounced deceased.
The autopsy results were finally released months after the custodial death. The detainee died from the combined toxic effects of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and heroin with non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage.
A solution suggested in connection to this tragic death is that detainees and staff members should have ready access to Naloxone, a nasal spray that quickly reverses an opioid overdose. Another idea was to screen every individual entering the facility.
Earlier in 2023, a 21-year-old detainee at the jail died from “acute toxicity due to the combined effects of fentanyl and heroin.”
