Jasper County, Texas Jail Fails State Inspection

County Jail
County Jail

A September 18, 2026, inspection of Jasper County Jail in Texas uncovered violations of three minimum jail standards. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS) formally notified the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office of its findings on September 23. As a result, the state added the facility to its list of jails currently out of compliance.

Two of the alleged minimum standard violations are found in the chapter addressing the classification and separation of inmates. In the first, the TCJS Inspector notes the following about noncompliance with Rule §271.1-Objective Classification Plan as follows:

  • An inspection of inmate classification records found errors in nine of the 25 files examined under the jail’s Objective Classification Plan. A separate review revealed that one inmate had been assigned to housing that did not meet classification requirements. Records also showed that the jail had failed to consistently separate minimum- and maximum-custody inmates as required.

The second is against Rule §271.7-Audit, and details of what the inspector found follow:

  • An inspection found that the jail conducted and submitted inmate classification audits every three months instead of monthly, as required by its approved Operational Plan on file with the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.

Thirdly, the Jasper County Jail violated Rule §275.1-Regular Observation by Jailers in the rules regarding the supervision of inmates as follows:

  • Records from August 2026 showed that jail staff did not meet the required schedule for more than 1,500 inmate observation rounds. Staff logged some checks one minute past the deadline, while others were logged several hours late. The inspector also raised the possibility that faulty electronic tracking equipment accounted for some of the reported delays.

Lack of Required Supervision Can Result in Detainee Deaths

Officials file the custodial death report after a custodial death occurs, and the details rarely reveal what occurred. That’s partly because an autopsy report is usually awaited. Standard procedure requires a special jail inspection after every custodial death. We do not intend to imply wrongdoing by sharing the information that follows.

The Jasper County Jail is at 101 Burch Street in Jasper, Texas 75951. The jail has a detainee capacity of 147.

Shelby County Jail, located at 100 Hurst Street in Center, Texas 75935, has a housing capacity of 66 inmates.
