Lawyer for Texas Police Abuse – A Spate of Custodial Deaths has One State Proposing Jail Reform – Part 10
The mental issues of the 36-year-old inmate that had previously led to bizarre behavior continued. On the day after his arrest, he threw a checkerboard and struck a jailer with a lunch tray while in a rage. The man was tackled by three guards. He was also allegedly kicked repeatedly in the head and pepper-sprayed.
Once the inmate was handcuffed, a video shows he was slammed into a concrete wall by two of the jailers. Next, he was led to a shower, where there are no cameras. While there, a state investigation determined that he was beaten again while still in handcuffs.
According to the guards, the inmate was behaving aggressively and required force because of the surprising strength he exhibited.
A video next shows the inmate writhing in pain in the infirmary. A licensed nurse assessed the condition of the inmate but did not administer any medication. The inmate was sent directly to an isolation cell where a jailer quickly left him after pinning him to the concrete floor and taking off his handcuffs. Video shows that the inmate first lay still on the floor and then crawled over to the commode. That’s when his movement stopped altogether. For 46 minutes, no one checked on the inmate. When they finally did, the inmate had no pulse. He was dead within hours.
