Man Commits Suicide in Ochiltree County, Texas Jail

Courthouse 1

The Ochiltree County Sheriff’s Department filed with the Attorney General of Texas a custodial death report regarding the death of Tommy Lynn Hernandez.  Information in this post was obtained from that report, and we do not have any personal knowledge of anything in this post.  We also make no allegation about any wrongdoing.

On January 21, 2018, shortly after 5:00 p.m., Mr. Hernandez would found hanging in a cell he occupied at the Ochiltree County Jail.  The report does not provide any detail about whether Mr. Hernandez was on suicide watch.  Prisoners with know issues must be closely watched, and the failure to do so can be a civil rights violation.  CPR was started, and City of Perryton EMTs responded.  Mr. Hernandez passed away four days later at a local hospital.  The Texas Rangers are conducting an investigation.
