Man Dies in Frio County, Texas After Interaction with Pearsall Police Department

Courthouse

Roberto Elizondo passed away on January 14, 2018 after an encounter with the Pearsall Police Department in Frio County, Texas.  Information we post here was obtained from a custodial death report filed by that police department with the Attorney General of Texas.  We make no allegations of any wrongdoing but are simply providing information.

Police received a telephone call about Mr. Elizondo, who was 57 years of age at the time, on January 13, 2018.  When police arrived, they observed Mr. Elizondo standing on the front porch of a residence.  Mr. Elizondo clearly had mental health issues, yelling about an invisible dog attacking him and about officers pouring gasoline on him (which was not occurring).  Ultimately, officers decided to take Mr. Elizondo in custody for an emergency mental health detention.  After doing so, at some point, Mr. Elizondo became non-responsive.  He passed away the following day at University Hospital.
