Tarrant County Jail Deaths Spark a Community Rally

In recent times, there have been numerous news stories about allegedly preventable custodial deaths among Tarrant County Jail inmates. Records show that nine detainees died in the custody of the Fort Worth jail in 2024 alone. These fatalities have sparked action among community activists. A rally is planned for January 14, 2025. The purpose is to bring awareness to the custodial deaths and the need for a policy and procedure review at Tarrant County Jail.

According to investigative news sources, the following is additional information about the most recent decedent:

  • He revealed a lengthy history of health issues during the medical interview portion of the booking process.
  • He was placed on a detox protocol.
  • He was scheduled for a mental and medical health evaluation.
  • He was allegedly denied his diabetic medication, after which he suffered the medical emergency that was followed by his death.

A 44-Year-Old Inmate at Tarrant County Jail Dies of Fentanyl and Trazodone Toxicity

In April 2023, a 44-year-old man was booked into Tarrant County Jail on a murder charge. During intake, he appeared to be intoxicated by drugs or alcohol. Eight months later, at 10:55 AM on January 9, 2024, he was discovered unresponsive in his cell, 59B 39. The next statement in the CDR says the inmate was pronounced deceased at 11:17 AM. Autopsy results showed that his death was an accident caused by “fentanyl and trazodone toxicity.” Jails have a responsibility to prevent inmates from obtaining contraband. Hence, this custodial death was preventable.
