The Texas Commission on Jail Standards (“TCJS”) recently conducted an inspection of the Maverick County jail in Texas. The Maverick County jail is run by The GEO group, Inc. As a result of the TCJS inspection, The Maverick County jail is listed as non-compliant with Texas standards.

The inspection occurred in January 22, 2020. The TCJS inspector could not verify that inmates had been reassessed or reclassified since nearly one year later – in March 2019. The inspector also could not verify that staff had conducted a classification audit since the last TCJS inspection – April 24, 2019. Finally, the TCJS inspector noted that inmate cells contained excessive amounts of contraband. The inspector considered the contraband to be dangerous and further noted in her report that jail officers do not remove such dangerous contraband.
