Bexar County Jail Allegedly Fails to Provide Suicide Prevention Training to Jailers
A Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS) inspector also found that Bexar County was non-compliant with Rule §273.5(a)(1)– Mental Disabilities/Suicide Prevention Plan, which is about required training of jail staff. The mandatory training ensures that staff members know how to recognize, supervise, document, and handle potentially suicidal inmates and detainees with mental disabilities. Members of the staff involved with intake screening must also be provided with supplemental training.
- The TCJS inspector noted that no training records could be provided for the purpose of proving that detention officers received the required suicide prevention training, per operational guidelines and approved plans.

On Sunday, July 31, 2022, a 50-year-old inmate dies after being found unresponsive in his cell in a county jail outside Texas the previous night. No clear answers are provided other than the statement that no foul play is suspected and records point to the possibility that the inmate died of a medical issue.
In addition, the inmate was transported to a local hospital for continued lifesaving efforts before he was pronounced dead. He had been booked into the jail on June 28, 2022. One of the alarming aspects of this tragic custodial death is that it is the 12th that has occurred in that county jail since January 1, 2022.
