Jail Deaths Resulting from Inmate Fights
A Florida County Jail Fight Results in a Custodial Death
A Florida county jail inmate died on March 19, 2022. The 31-year-old was injured during a fight with a fellow inmate 15 days before he died.
According to a police report that was later released, the fight was over a $2 bag lunch. The now-deceased inmate was unable to pay back the money at that time but said he could do so in another week. The two men began to argue verbally, and then the other inmate physically attacked the 31-year-old. It seemed that the deceased was first chest-bumped, then punched and placed in a headlock. The other inmate then began to hit the deceased repeatedly, after which the deceased fell down.
The deceased did not feel well after the fight and was examined by the medical staff. He was then taken to a hospital, where he was found to have a brain bleed. Emergency surgery was performed, but he remained in critical condition until his death.
The medical examiner’s office ruled that the cause of death was homicide resulting from blunt force head trauma. Witnesses had different stories about what happened, including many that said the deceased started the fight. According to the States Attorney’s Office, the homicide was ruled justifiable for this reason.
