New Jersey Inmate John Finucane Dies in a Hudson County Hospital

Front of Jail Cell

In November 17, 2025, news out of New Jersey, officials in Hudson County have confirmed the death of 32-year-old inmate John Finucane, who was discovered unresponsive in his housing unit at the Hudson County Correctional Facility on the morning of November 15, 2025.

According to statements released by the County Prosecutor’s Office, correctional officers and on-site medical personnel initiated emergency aid immediately after locating Mr. Finucane at approximately 7:40 a.m. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased just after 8:30 a.m.

Public records indicate that Mr. Finucane had been held at the facility since October 5, 2025. The circumstances leading to his medical emergency and death have not yet been determined. Authorities have launched a formal investigation, and the cause and manner of death will be established following further review, which may include an autopsy and examination of medical and custodial records.

Under federal constitutional standards, jails are required to provide reasonable medical care, safety, and supervision to individuals in their custody. When a death occurs behind bars, families often have questions about the timeline of events, the response of facility personnel, and whether appropriate monitoring or medical intervention was provided.

The address for the Hudson County Correctional Facility is 910 Newark Turnpike, Kearny, New Jersey 07032. The jail has a bed capacity of about 1,800.

Legal Concerns Raised After In-Custody Death at Hudson County Correctional Facility

Authorities in Jersey City have confirmed the death of 63-year-old inmate Derrick Ellis, who was discovered unresponsive in the medical unit of the Hudson County Correctional Facility on March 21, 2025. According to official reports, correctional officers and on-site medical staff attempted lifesaving measures before Mr. Ellis was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office has opened a formal investigation to determine what occurred leading up to Mr. Ellis’s death, including whether medical protocols, supervision requirements, and facility procedures were properly followed.

Because Mr. Ellis was housed in the jail’s medical unit, the investigation may focus on the adequacy of monitoring and care provided to inmates with known medical needs.

Key Issues Likely to Be Examined in the Ongoing Investigation

As officials move forward with reviewing the circumstances surrounding Derrick Ellis’s death, the inquiry—overseen by Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office—is expected to concentrate on several critical areas:

Medical Care and Protocols:
Investigators will assess whether appropriate medical standards were followed and whether Mr. Ellis received the level of health care required for his condition while housed in the jail’s medical unit.

Monitoring and Supervision:
A central question will be whether Mr. Ellis was properly observed and checked in the hours leading up to the moment he was found unresponsive.

Emergency and Response Procedures:
Authorities will evaluate how staff reacted once Mr. Ellis was discovered, including the timing and adequacy of lifesaving measures and medical emergency notifications.

Because Mr. Ellis was assigned to a medical unit specifically intended for detainees needing specialized attention, his death raises additional concerns about whether the oversight, staffing, and procedures in that unit were sufficient—or whether broader systemic issues may have contributed to the outcome.
