Newly Released Dashcam Videos show New Jersey State Police Searching a Man’s Anus and Genitals on the Side of a Road
Graphic dashcam videos released in the first week of April 2018 and posted on the Internet show two officers with the New Jersey State Police searching a man’s genitals and anus for marijuana during a traffic stop. On March 8, 2017, Jack Levine was driving in Southampton on Burlington Road when officers pulled him over and then claimed they smelled marijuana on him. On the side of the road, the two officers with the state police rammed their hands to the front and back of Levine’s pants over a 5-minute period.
On the video, one of the officers announces to Levine that getting stopped was not the worst thing that was going to happen to him that day. Wearing rubber gloves, the officer then began a long and thorough search of the man’s anus and genitals. Both officers got involved with the search. At one point Levine asked if he was under arrest and for what reason. One of the officers replied that he was going to be arrested for the odor of marijuana.
Ultimately, the officers found no marijuana during the cavity search. Levine was cited for tailgating and was then free to leave.
Since the incident, Levine filed a tort claim notice that notes his intention to sue with regard to the incident. The release of the dashcam videos was delayed for months, according to Levine. After he was finally able to watch them, he alleged that he was violated by both officers. He also said drivers were slowing down and watching as the officers had their hands down his pants and that it was the most humiliating experience of his life.
New Jersey lawmakers are currently debating whether to legalize marijuana in the state.
