Newton County, Texas Jail Fails State Inspection
The Texas Commission on Jail Inspections (TCJS) now lists Newton County Jail in Texas as a Non-Compliant Jail. A Notice of Non-Compliance was sent to Newton County Jail on May 22, 2023, regarding the special jail inspection conducted on May 18, 2023. Newton County Jail was cited for noncompliance with 1 minimum jail standard.
RULE §263.3(1) General
In the chapter about Life Safety Rules, Subchapter C Detection and Alarm Systems, Rule §263.3(1) General, an automatic fire detection and alarm system shall be provided for all facilities. The system shall include automatic fire detection for all areas of the facility.
- A review of documentation revealed that the Newton County Jail’s fire panel has been inoperable since January 25, 2023. Furthermore, this inspector was never made aware of this matter.
