Officers in Denton, Texas, Allegedly Fatally Shoot a Man Wielding a Knife
A man wielding a knife in Denton, Texas, allegedly taunted police officers and advanced on them before allegedly being fatally shot by officers with the Denton Police Department. The alleged fatal police-involved shooting happened on Monday, February 19, 2018. Two law enforcement officers were at the scene on Spencer Street at about 3:15 p.m., where they were working on a vehicle crash report.
According to Lt. Lonny Haschel, who is with the Texas Department of Public Safety, a man approached the rear of the police cruiser and started shouting at the officers. When the officers exited their vehicle to approach the man, they saw that he pulled out a knife. He allegedly taunted the officers with the knife and walked into a nearby wooded area, ignoring police commands to stop. The man then came back out of the woods still holding the knife, and officers say he behaved very aggressively toward them. One of the officers used an electronic weapon on the man, but afterwards the man with the knife continued his threats. At that time, the man allegedly advanced toward the officers. One police officer allegedly fired his weapon and struck the man. Police officers called for emergency services and performed first aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure.
