In Brownsville, Texas, on Thursday, October 5, 2017, police officers were attempting to serve a warrant on a man when the man they were looking for allegedly came at them holding a knife. Officers say they repeatedly instructed the man to put the weapon down. Authorities say that the man refused to do so, resulting in officers allegedly firing their weapons at him, in fear for their lives. The man was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

As a result of the alleged shooting, several police officers will be placed on three days of administrative leave while authorities investigate the shooting, according to J. J. Trevino, spokesperson for the Brownsville Police Department. The Texas Rangers are involved in the investigation.

According to the victim’s family, their loved one had been sleeping when the officers arrived at the door and knocked. The man’s aunt said she answered the door and a short time after that, she heard five gunshots fired. She claims that the man who was shot had not been holding a knife and that the family wants justice.

Since September 7, 2016, the Brownsville Police Department has been equipped with body cameras. At that time, the plan was for every officer to be equipped with a body camera before January 2017. There was no mention of body cameras, however, in the reporting of this story about the alleged deadly police shooting in Brownsville.
