Michael Watkins Died After Suffering Agony While Incarcerated in Florida’s Marion County Jail
Jails are required to provide emergency services for inmates when needed. It doesn’t always happen that way, however, which often results in alleged preventable custodial deaths. Tragically, such was the case with 37-year-old Michael Watkins. He had been serving a seven-month sentence in Marion County Jail for driving without a license. Mr. Watkins was weeks away from fulfilling the terms of his sentence when, on January 28, 2021, he began to experience abdominal pain and was sent to the infirmary.
Two days later, Mr. Watkins began experiencing excruciating pain. Witnesses say he was in apparent agony in his cell for almost two hours. While lying doubled over on the floor, witnesses say he was begging his jailers for help, imploring them to send him to the hospital.
Fellow inmates said they all began screaming for jail staff and beating on the bars of their cells. When a jailer finally came, they reportedly asked the jailer if they were just going to wait and let Mr. Watkins “lay here and die.”
Eventually, on January 30, Mr. Watkins was transported to AdventHealth Ocala Hospital. He underwent emergency surgery for an obstructed bowel. Afterward, he was moved to the ICU. The next morning, he suffered a heart attack and internal bleeding. Michael Watkins was pronounced deceased by hospital staff at 9:10 a.m. on January 31, 2021.
- The Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his cause of death to be ischemic necrosis of the intestines, a condition which causes shock, organ failure, and sepsis.
- According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the death rate of an obstructed bowel is only 10% if treated promptly. Left untreated, the death rate is nearly 100%.
Symptoms of bowel obstruction that require immediate emergency medical treatment include severe abdominal pain, abdominal swelling or bloating, vomiting, and an inability to pass a stool or gas. Jails must have medical personnel who can recognize when inmates are experiencing a medical emergency, and there should be no hesitation in providing the appropriate lifesaving measures.
Marion County Jail’s address is 700 Northwest 30th Avenue, Ocala, FL, 34475. The jail’s maximum inmate capacity is 1,924.
