Two Inmate Suicides Occur Within Weeks at Wayne County Jail
The new Wayne County Jail in Detroit, Michigan, was immediately fraught with problems such as staffing shortages and inmate protests when things got worse. First, an inmate whose name and details have been withheld committed suicide.
A few weeks later, on September 10, 2024, Virgil-Dan Brown III was discovered hanging from a bed sheet in his cell. His body fell when deputies entered his cell, and he was barely alive. It was determined that Mr. Brown was brain-dead. He died four days later when he was taken off life support.
Mr. Brown’s fellow inmates said the jail staff had been indifferent to his cries for help. Staff members, including jail nurses, and inmates said that he reported to them that he felt suicidal. Once, he was even found with a bed sheet fashioned into a noose, and a member of the jail staff told him to take it down. There was allegedly no further action taken by jail personnel.
Fellow inmates say jail staff ignored the man’s cries for help. He was denied treatment for his mental issues. Two days before his suicide, he told medical staff that he needed to see a mental health professional. Jail staff told him that someone would see him the next day, but no one ever came.
Around 3 p.m. on September 10, he covered the window in his cell with a sheet. This is recognized as a strategy often used to obscure suicidal actions. Allegedly, jail staff ignored the red flag. Two hours later, he was discovered, as mentioned above. Virgil-Dan Brown III was only 22 years old.
A 27-Year-Old Woman Dies in Wayne County Jail
Haley Danielle Alvarado, 27, was arrested on July 3, 2022, and booked into Wayne County Jail. Tragically, she died on July 9, 2022. Detention officers discovered her suffering from a self-inflicted medical emergency. In other words, as clarified in a news story, she hung herself. Efforts to revive her failed and she was pronounced deceased.
Suicide is something that should be guarded against with diligence because it is the leading cause of jail deaths. Although various stories are told about chaos at Wayne County Jail, there is never an excuse for being negligent concerning suicide prevention. After suicides occur, it is sometimes discovered that jail staff did not receive their mandatory training about how to prevent suicide. Proper training should include instructions for avoiding any demonstrations of deliberate indifference.
The address of Wayne County Jail is 570 Clinton St, Detroit, MI 48226. The total inmate capacity of the Wayne County Jail is 770.
