Three Inmates Outside Texas Unnecessarily Die of Infections
A county jail outside Texas came under heightened scrutiny after an inmate died of sepsis. If the 22-year-old had been given antibiotics, he could have avoided the deadly condition. It was announced that the health department would adopt changes in the way inmates suspected of sepsis are treated.
In another jail outside Texas, a woman had badly swollen feet when she was booked into the jail. She said she was very ill and felt she would pass out. Instead of being transferred to a hospital, she was placed in a cell. She was denied medical treatment and six days after her arrival at the jail, jailers discovered her unresponsive on the floor. She was moved to a hospital, where she died of a heart infection. Her death is considered to have been preventable.
On yet another occasion outside Texas, an inmate died of sepsis while serving an eight-month sentence. The 50-year-old man died of pneumonia he contracted in the jail and sepsis.
