Sheriff Sys a Deputy’s Body Camera was Charging Wen he Allegedly Fatally Shot an Unarmed Man in Houston, Texas
Danny Ray Thomas was ordered by a Harris County deputy to get on the ground, and then the deputy allegedly fired his weapon and killed him, all within 17 seconds. The alleged fatal police-involved shooting occurred on March 22, 2018, in Greater Greenspoint in Houston, Harris County, Texas. A video was released by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, March 27. It does not, however, show the fatal shot.
Authorities are investigating the deadly encounter that took place at the busy intersection of Greens Road and Imperial Valley Drive. Ed Gonzalez, Harris County Sheriff, said the deputy has been placed on administrative leave. He also says the deputy claims to have believed his life was in danger, though 34-year-old Thomas was unarmed. Thomas was also foaming at the mouth, the sheriff said, and had his pants down. In addition, the deputy’s camera battery was charging in the deputy’s vehicle at the time of the alleged shooting and had been issued to the deputy less than two hours before the incident. An internal investigation into the alleged deadly officer-involved shooting is moving forward. According to Gonzalez, the deputy’s decision-making will be explored, including why he fired his gun rather than his electronic weapon.
Gonzalez said all officer-involved shootings are taken seriously, and he says that he will personally ensure that the investigation is thorough, fair, and expeditious.
