Texas Rangers Investigate Apparent Suicide in Rockdale, Texas Jail

Courthouse 4

The Texas Rangers are investigating the death Renee Serna.  Ms. Serna was found unconscious in her jail cell in Rockdale, Texas.  It appears that Ms. Serna may have committed suicide.  The Rockdale Police Department is required to file a custodial death report with the Texas State Attorney General within 30 days after Ms. Serna’s death.  Once it does so, more details might be available.

Unfortunately, suicide continues to be a leading cause of death among Texas inmates. If jailers are aware of a person’s self-harm tendencies and ignore those tendencies, the jailers can be liable for violations of the United States Constitution.  We make no allegation of any wrongdoing in this post, but we are instead simply providing information.
