The Kaufman County Sheriff TX Reports a 4/12/22 Inmate Death
Chauncey Elmer Toombs, age 51, was booked into Kaufman County Jail on April 12, 2022, and placed in a holding cell. He died the next day by hanging/strangulation. The address of Kaufman County Jail is 1900 E US Hwy 175 in Kaufman, Texas, zip 75142.

Kaufman County Jail Inmate Elmer Dale Barrett Dies on 5/19/19
Seventy-year-old Elmer Dale Barrett was booked into Kaufman County Jail on February 24, 2019. The CDR report about his death indicated that he exhibited medical problems when he entered the jail.
The brief summary of how Mr. Barrett’s death occurred indicates that he was discovered unresponsive. Members of the jail medical staff responded to the scene and a call was made requesting emergency medical services. Mr. Barrett was transported in an ambulance to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:31 AM on May 19, 2019.
The CDR shows that Mr. Barrett had been housed in a multiple-occupancy cell. He died of a heart attack, which is categorized as “natural causes.” Under the question of whether he was treated for the medical condition that caused his death after being admitted to the jail, the indication is that it is unknown whether he received any medical treatment.
