In South Carolina news, 32-year-old Tonya Zorn was being held in Aiken County Jail when she was discovered unresponsive in her cell on July 23, 2025. Emergency medical services (EMS) were called, and Ms. Zorn was taken by ambulance to Aiken Regional Medical Centers, where she was pronounced deceased. According to a press release, the coroner’s office began an investigation into Ms. Zorn’s death at about 5:30 p.m. the same day.

An autopsy was scheduled for the coming week. In the meantime, neither the cause nor the manner of death has been announced. The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to lead an investigation into Ms. Zorn’s death in conjunction with the coroner’s office. The sheriff’s office also said that no suspicious circumstances seem to be involved in her death. The reason for Ms. Zorn’s recent incarceration was not made known.

Aiken County Jail is also known as the Aiken County Detention Center. The jail’s address is 435 Wire Rd, Aiken, 29801, SC; and the inmate capacity has recently been increased to 450 with the completion of an expansion project in 2025.

A Bexar County Jail Inmate’s Death is Ruled a Suicide

In this week’s San Antonio, Texas, news, a man incarcerated in Bexar County Jail died on Tuesday, July 22, 2025. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the 48-year-old man’s death a suicide. The same article mentioned that this week’s custodial death is the eighth at the Bexar County Jail this year. Of the eight deaths, at least three were suicides.

After any death occurs in a Texas jail, the Texas Commission on Jail Standards always conducts a special jail inspection. On November 18, 2024, the Bexar County Jail was most recently cited for non-compliance. The special jail inspection was a likely follow-up to the suicide of a 27-year-old woman in early November 2024. What few details there are about her tragic death follow:

  • During the booking process, the woman did not make suicidal statements or exhibit mental health problems—both of which are strong indicators that a detainee may be a suicide risk. Nothing was mentioned about the suicide in the custodial death report’s (CDR’s) summary of how the death occurred. However, in answer to different questions in the CDR, the details are found.
  • The medical examiner found that the inmate’s manner of death was suicide, and the medical cause of death was asphyxia by hanging. The deceased was in a single-occupancy cell.

The inspectors’ notes about the two areas of non-compliance that are likely related to the above-mentioned custodial death indicate the following:

• A review of documents provided after a custodial death revealed that the inmate was held in a holding cell for more than 48 hours.

• A review of documentation provided revealed that the inmate did not receive medication as prescribed.
