Two Travis County, Texas Jail Prisoners are Found Dead on the Same Day in Separate Incidents
On Saturday, March 31, 2018, in Travis County Jail, Austin, Texas, two prisoners were discovered dead in separate incidents authorities say are unrelated. The prisoners, both Austin residents, were 24-year-old Eric Taylor and 50-year-old Donald Coor. Officials said an internal and criminal investigation is underway by the Texas Rangers, the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, and the medical examiner’s office, which is standard procedure in any custodial death. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards will conduct a special investigation, as well. Documents and surveillance videos will be scrutinized in an effort to determine whether minimum jail standards were met in connection with the custodial deaths at Travis County Jail.
Officials say that Coor was discovered unresponsive during meal service at about 5:40 a.m. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was conducted on Coor by corrections officers and medical staff at the jail. Further efforts to resuscitate Coor were made by Austin-Travis County EMS medics, but officials said Coor was pronounced dead at the jail.
At about 5 p.m., approximately 12 hours after Coor was found dead, Taylor was discovered unresponsive on the floor of his cell. CPR was also performed on Taylor by medical staff, corrections officers, and Austin-Travis County EMS personnel. He did not resuscitate and was pronounced dead at 5:54 p.m.
The cause of death of the men will be determined by toxicology reports and other test results, which are still pending.
