Van Zandt County, Texas Jail Fails State Inspection
The Van Zandt County Jail in Canton, Texas, was inspected on July 2, 2026, during which a repeat violation was discovered. A Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS) inspector found the violation while reviewing training records. The Van Zandt County Jail is currently listed on the TCJS noncompliance page of the correctional oversight body’s website.
- A review of life safety training records found that not all employees had completed the required quarterly training. Documentation indicated that one staff member missed the fourth-quarter 2025 training as well as the first and second quarters of 2026. Records also showed that another employee did not complete the required training during the first and second quarters of 2026.
Although different rule numbers were cited in July 2025, the recent violation of minimum jail standards is a repeat offense. Last year, the inspectors’ notes indicated the following:
- A review of training records found that three employees assigned to the A-Day Shift did not complete the required life safety training during the fourth quarter of 2024.
Patterns of ongoing problems in a jail are never a good sign. It can ultimately mean that detainees’ constitutional rights could be violated, even contributing to inmate deaths. One type of violation that is often associated with preventable jail deaths is inadequate supervision. In March 2023, Van Zandt County Jail was cited for five violations total, and three of them involved supervision. One of the rules breached involved a failure to adequately supervise inmates being held in a restraint chair—a repeat violation, according to a January 2021 inspection. Yet anyone placed in a restraint chair is at an increased health risk, making frequent supervision crucial.
Signs of possible gross neglect seemed evident at Van Zandt County Jail, per information in the 2021 custodial death report (CDR) concerning a 48-year-old man who demonstrated possible mental challenges.
