Vern Heath is Found Deceased in Oregon’s Jefferson County Jail

In Oregon news, a Madras inmate at Jefferson County Jail was found deceased just before his scheduled court appearance on a charge of driving while under the influence of intoxicants.
Vern Sonny Heath, 37, was discovered deceased in his single-occupancy cell at Oregon’s Jefferson County Jail on Friday, September 12, 2025. Members of his family contacted a local news source, and court records confirmed the fact of Heath’s death.
The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is in charge of the investigation into Mr. Heath’s death. The DCSO Public Information Officer confirmed that Mr. Heath died at the jail. No other details have been provided.

An Inmate who Died in Colorado’s El Paso County Jail was Allegedly Denied Medical Care
Cristo Canett was at an emergency room in Colorado Springs, Colorado, when he was arrested on an outstanding warrant following a family dispute. However, Mr. Canett had been at an emergency room for the second time in two weeks. He was suffering from increasing pain.
Surveillance video inside the El Paso County Jail shows Mr. Canett in obvious pain, clutching his stomach. Despite his place of arrest and his obvious distress, he was never seen by a doctor. After booking, he was placed in a regular cell. Mr. Canett was in a wheelchair hours later due to severe pain.
Mr. Canett was discovered deceased in his cell just two days after his arrest, on April 26, 2022. According to the El Paso County Coroner, Mr. Canett’s cause of death was internal bleeding caused by a perforated ulcer.

James Tatsch Dies of Complications of Diabetes in a Mississippi Jail
Forty-eight-year-old James Tatsch was an inmate in Alcorn County Jail for 12 days before his death on January 17, 2024. Mr. Tatsch’s cause of death was diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). The most common causes of diabetic ketoacidosis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are illness, the wrong insulin dose, missed insulin shots, and a clogged insulin pump.
Death by DKA is preventable, says the owner of the Diabetes Center in Ocean Springs, who is also a nurse practitioner.
