Why Aren’t More Fentanyl Deaths in Jails Prevented?-Pt. 11

Seven Women in a County Jail Outside Texas Overdose

The story about seven female inmates suffering symptoms of drug overdoses in a county jail outside Texas is, sadly, not uncommon. The women were taken to the hospital by the fire department. The article doesn’t mention that Narcan was used, but they are all expected to survive. Police only suspect at this point that it was fentanyl, while the investigation into the incident continues.

The jail brought additional officers in and a search for contraband was conducted in every pod.

In the following unrelated story, a scenario happens that is also a frequent happening. It tells the story of fentanyl that was discovered before anyone suffered an overdose.

A Woman Attempts to Smuggle Fentanyl into a County Jail

In an April 2023 story that took place in a county outside Texas, a woman was going through intake, which included a body scanner check. It is used to discover illicit substances that may be smuggled in.

Correctional officers were commended for their diligence because they found that the woman was in possession of contraband. She was placed in a single holding cell until more than 17 grams of fentanyl could be recovered. They believe that lives were saved with the removal of the dangerous drug.
