Why Aren’t More Fentanyl Deaths in Jails Prevented?-Pt. 3
A Sheriff Outside Texas Investigates Fentanyl Exposures at the County Jail Continued
The sheriff went on to say that nine more incidents similar to the one described in Part 2 of this series have occurred since then. In each instance, inmates received several doses of Narcan and it is believed that all of them will make a full recovery. This raises the question of whether Narcan should be required in jails, much like lifesaving automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
13+ Inmates at a County Jail Outside Texas Overdose on Fentanyl in the Week Ending March 8, 2023
A sheriff in a county outside Texas said on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, that at least 13 inmates overdosed on fentanyl the previous week. In addition, one of the jail deputies was taken to the hospital for possible exposure.
The sheriff described the first incident. Deputies said that two inmates appeared to be suffering from serious medical emergencies. Several doses of Narcan were administered to the inmates, Narcan being a spray containing naloxone, which reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. The inmates were taken to a hospital for further assessment, and they returned to jail.
A deputy who responded to the incident also appeared to be suffering from symptoms and he also went to the hospital.
The next day, two more inmates suffered overdoses.
