Why Aren’t More Fentanyl Deaths in Jails Prevented?-Pt. 8
An Inmate Smuggles in Fentanyl, Resulting in Another Inmate’s Death
In a county jail outside Texas, several preventative security measures were unsuccessful as a woman is believed to have brought fentanyl into the jail. These measures include two body scans, a pat down search, and a strip search. Later, when investigating the fentanyl death of another inmate, they looked back at the images from the body scans, and they discovered that there were abnormalities in the image. She is suspected of hiding fentanyl pills in her body.
On January 20, 2023, a female at the county jail died. A deputy sheriff discovered her unresponsive in her cell. The jailer started applying lifesaving measures immediately and the medical staff soon took over. Afterward, an emergency services team and the fire department took over. It does not say whether they gave her Narcan which may have saved her life. The autopsy revealed that the woman died of fentanyl intoxication.
The woman suspected of smuggling fentanyl into the jail has been charged with proximate cause of death by unlawful distribution.
The above story is similar to what happened in another county jail outside Texas. A woman has been arrested for the death of a man who died of a suspected fentanyl overdose. Reports say the woman supplied and distributed the fentanyl he ingested. She did not attempt to render aid when the man became completely unresponsive, and she fled before officers arrived.
