Why Isn’t Suicide Prevention in County Jails Saving More Lives?-Pt.6
A 55-Year-Old Ector County Jail Inmate Commits Suicide on 10/21/22
A 55-year-old man was booked into Ector County Jail on 10/2/2022. The address of the jail is 2500 S. US Hwy 385 in Odessa TX 79763. The following actions by the inmate are told in the summary of how the death occurred. It appears that the summary put the wrong date as the date of death. He was pronounced deceased on October 21, 2022, and the summary describes events that occurred on the date of entry, which is an error. What he was observed by video camera doing follows—the entire suicide was videotaped:
- The inmate was in his cell alone with the door closed. He was laying on his bunk. He then got up and covered the metal mesh see-through bars portion of the cell and covered it with the sheet to his bedding. He blocked visuals from other inmates. He then tied the corners of the sheet from end to end of the mesh wall.
- The inmate then wrapped a second sheet around his neck and tied it to the mesh wall. He began to choke himself while standing against the wall. After a few seconds, the inmate lost consciousness and went limp and began to hang. He was found a few hours later in his cell, deceased. He was in Cell 2348 and there was an active recording camera in the cell. Texas Rangers were notified and responded to the jail for an investigation.
