Health Services

Being incarcerated does not mean that a person loses their right to medical services in the event they become ill. Among the minimum standards for jails is a requirement for each facility, no matter the size, to have a written plan that is approved by TCJS for providing inmate mental, medical, and dental services. The facility must also implement that plan. The following are among their requirements for health services plans in Texas County jails:

• There must be a procedure in place to refer inmates for needed medical, dental, and mental services.
• Disabled inmates must be provided with the necessary convalescent long-term care.
• When inmates have prescription medications that they need to take, the distribution of those medications must be administered by a person designated by the Sheriff or jail operator.    
• There must be a plan in place to give inmates access to a health professional or a telehealth service 24 hours per day.
