Mental Disabilities/Suicide Prevention Plan

The most important responsibility as regards county jails is to keep inmates safe. Like all jails in Texas, Colorado County Jail is required to develop and implement a plan for proper care of inmates with mental disabilities and or the potential for committing suicide. The following are among the requirements of this crucial jail standard:

• Jail staff must have training in which they learn how to recognize, supervise, document, and handle mentally disabled and potentially suicidal inmates. For staff members with the responsibility of intake screening, supplemental training should be provided, as well.
• Proper identification of at-risk inmates is important. During the process of intake screening, the inmates who are observed to be or known to be potentially suicidal and or mentally disabled must be identified.
• Once an inmate has been identified as mentally disabled or possibly suicidal, referrals must be made to available mental health officials.
• Appropriate housing must be provided for inmates who are mentally disabled or possibly suicidal.
