Suicide Prevention

The TCJS collaborated with multiple organizations to address custodial suicides and how better to prevent them. As a result of research and analysis, the following conclusions were drawn. The information was used to make positive changes to minimum jail standards in Texas.

• It is essential to the well-being and health of inmates at Franklin County Jail and all Texas jails to train jailers on how to identify that a person has a risk of suicide as well as knowing how to recognize symptoms of mental illness.
• Although not all suicides are predictable or preventable, providing increased training to jailers effectively enhances the safety of inmates.
• Intake screening of inmates is a crucial component to ensure that mentally disabled inmates and those who are suicidal receive heightened supervision.
• Routine monitoring of inmates is instrumental in the prevention of jail suicides.
