Mental History Check

Galveston County Jail and all jail facilities in Texas are required to come up with a plan for addressing mental disabilities and suicide prevention. When an inmate is determined to be mentally disabled, extra precautions are taken to ensure his or her safety. Mental history checks are part of the process, and they involve the following requirements:

  • The name of each inmate booked into jail must be checked against records in the Department of State Health Services CCQ system to find out whether the inmate has received state mental healthcare at any time in the past. Exceptions include if the inmate is an out-of-state inmate being housed in Texas or if it is a federal prisoner staying at the jail on a contractual basis.
  • Documentation must be maintained showing the results of the records checked.
  • The mental health screening instrument must reflect any mental health information discovered in the mental history check.
