Restraint Chairs

TCJS has allowed for the use of restraint chairs, though they are controversial. A range of restraint devices is available for jailers to use when inmates are exhibiting potentially harmful behavior. The most restrictive TCJS-approved device is a restraint chair.  

Medical care must accompany the use of restraint devices, and there are plenty of reasons to recognize that the care of medical personnel is especially essential as regards restraint chairs. For instance, inmates in restraints must be observed by jail personnel every 15 minutes. Obstruction of blood circulation is a potential threat with all restraints, but the possible development of a life-threatening blood clot is more prevalent among inmates strapped into a restraint chair.
