Wrongful Death, Neglect, and Abuse in Jail Lawyer/Attorney in Texas: Wood County Jail

Wood County Jail in Quitman, Texas 75783 is more commonly known as Wood County Correctional Facility. Wood County Jail’s address is 402 S Andrew Stephens Street. The inmate capacity at the jail is 157, and (903) 763-2201 is the phone number. The Wood County Sheriff handles Wood County Jail operations. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS) has the responsibility of establishing and enforcing standards of operation, which all county jails in the state must adhere to. TCJS inspects every county jail on a yearly basis, though non-compliant jails are inspected at least once more. Heightened scrutiny continues until a jail meets the required standards of operation.

Restraint Chairs

Included in the guidelines for Texas jails is the use of restraint devices that have been TCJS-approved. The most restrictive of the restraint devices is a restraint chair. The rules dictate that the least restrictive type must be used to restrain an inmate who is behaving in a manner that threatens to cause harm. If all other methods have failed, a restraint chair can be utilized to mitigate the situation.

Inmates strapped into a restraint chair are highly vulnerable because of the inability to move. Research conducted by watchdog groups has revealed that jailers in lockups across the nation have a pattern in which they abuse inmates in restraint chairs. Records show, as well, that inmates have died after being placed in a restraint chair.

A known danger associated with restraint chairs is that the inactivity forced upon individuals can cause blood clots to form. This creates a threat since blood clots can cause a deadly pulmonary embolism.

The posts on this site are provided as possible sources of assistance to inmates who are or have been detained in a county jail in Texas. There is never an intent to suggest that institutions or persons have engaged in improprieties.
