Yet Another Death of a Bexar County Jail Detainee

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, in San Antonio, Texas, filed a report regarding the custodial death of Jaime Valdez. Mr. Valdez was only 52 years old at the time of his death. We provide information we obtained from that report, and we make no allegation of any wrongdoing against anyone.

The summary portion of the report reads in its entirety:

“Inmate Valdez, Jaime #XXXXXX was brought into the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office by S.A.P.D., at approximately 1814 hours on October 18, 2023, on a Class A Misdemeanor Enhanced for Theft under $2500.00. Inmate Valdez completed the medical process and was sitting in the open area of booking. Sgt. A. Martinez #1330 was notified by Inmate John Elizalde #XXXXXX, that Inmate Valdez was not breathing while sitting in the open area of Booking. Sgt. A. Martinez immediately went over to Inmate Valdez who was unresponsive and notified Sgt. J. Ward to call a Code 1 Blue. SERT Officer B. Santo Domingo began lifesaving procedures. S.A.F.D. arrived at in Booking and continued with the lifesaving procedures. At approximately 1943 hours Inmate J. Valdez was pronounced deceased by S.A.F.D.”

Oddly, the report provides no information regarding any ongoing medical issues with Mr. Valdez or whether he was receiving any medical treatment.
